Overview
The Research Infrastructure in Minority Institutions (RIMI) Project, at the University of the District of Columbia, aims to support the development and advancement of scientific knowledge and preparedness among junior faculty and students in the Department of Nursing and Allied Health,  for conducting health disparity research.Through a collaborative partnership with Howard University and the McFarland Institute,  the RIMI Project at UDC promotes and nurtures research capacity through: structured training and professional development seminars; mentoring and coaching from seasoned researchers; and through hands-on experience in proposal development, submission, project implementation and evaluation.RIMI focuses on institutional capacity building, faculty research development,  academic enrichment and career  training. This grant is intended to assist non-research intensive minority-serving institutions solidify and strengthen their academic infrastructure and capacity to add to the critical mass of research trained professionals.

Project Goals


The RIMI Project at UDC will integrate teaching and research while maintaining its core purpose and monitoring outcomes:

1—Identify and prepare ten UDC tenure track faculty from the Department of Nursing and Allied Health to conduct independent research. 

■Thirteen UDC RIMI faculty scholars are actively engaged in behavioral research training and independent exercises with their Howard University mentors.  Faculty scholars are required to complete a set of established core research competencies by the conclusion of the grant.

2—Identify and mentor four undergraduate students in nursing and allied health who demonstrate promise for establishing a productive career in research and provide them with research and  training.

■Six student researchers completed a summer research symposium, received research manuals, and are working closely with a visiting faculty mentor .

3—Promote the development of a research culture at UDC through a series of ongoing enrichment activities for faculty and students.

■RIMI provides an annual Summer Research Institute, professional development courses, mentor activities, Research Retreat, RIMI SEARCH Grants, and participation in the annual HBCU Research Networking Meeting.

4—Infuse research concepts and methods across the nursing and allied health curriculum at UDC targeting  the elimination of racial and ethnic health disparities.

■Nursing faculty are restructuring and updating the curriculum.

5—Build an academic research infrastructure at UDC that supports cutting edge, innovative education and research related to the elimination of health disparities.

■The RIMI Project houses a new, state-of-the-art, SMART Room that provides 24-hour access for faculty scholars and student researchers.
