Speech Language Pathology

The bachelor's program in Speech & Language Pathology is designed to provide students with the following: an understanding of the process of normal and abnormal communication; knowledge necessary to apply linguistic theories to the study of communication disorders; clinical practice needed to develop skills as professionals; knowledge and skills necessary to pursue interdisciplinary research in sociolinguistic behavior, and speech-language pathology; and an understanding of the expanding role of the speech and language pathologist. There are two major options; speech and language pathology with a non-clinical concentration, and speech and language pathology with a clinical concentration. Requirements vary according to the students' areas of concentration.

The Master of Science in Speech -Language Pathology is designed to provide training for individuals who wish to become certified by the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association; provide clinical services in hospitals, clinics or schools; and become knowledgeable in theoretical aspects of communication disorders. Emphasis is placed on communication behavior in relation to problems in urban populations. Students in this program specialize in clinical services.

Additional Comments and Requirements

The minimum acceptable grade point average for Speech and Language Pathology courses is 2.5, with a minimum grade of "B" in the practicum courses (SPLP 460, 491). Satisfactory completion of a minimum of 125 clock-hours of supervised speech practicum is also required for the clinical option.
