Dale W. Lyons
Student Representative of the Board of Trustees
Dale W. Lyons was born in Washington, DC and attended DC public schools. Mr. Lyons would drop out of the public schools system due to what he considered to be a boring and uninspiring curriculum. Mr. Lyons pursued the education process without the aid of the public school system. It was during this experience that he promised himself that he would find a way to make the process of learning stimulating and invigorating for the learner. In 1982, Mr. Lyons went to work for Community Multi Services, where he worked with people who had learning disabilities, autism, and mental retardation. After a few years, Mr. Lyons was promoted to program coordinator where he began teaching staff to work with people with disabilities. He became an ordained minister in 2001, working with youth and teaching Sunday school. In 2003, Mr. Lyons returned to school to complete his secondary education, receiving his high school diploma in 2004. After graduation, he enrolled at UDC where his desire for becoming an educator began to take root. Majoring in special education, Mr. Lyons is scheduled to receive his BS degree in May 2010. While at UDC, he recognized the need for students with special needs to access tutoring and university assistance. Mr. Lyons’ philosophy of education is simple: he believes that there is no person that can’t learn and that it is the educator’s responsibility to motivate the desire, stimulate the mind, and facilitate the needs of each person’s dream of living their life to the fullest.
