A major part of his research has been in the study of superconductivity. His work in this field led to a new type of voltage standard now in use worldwide. Dr. Langenberg has contributed much to scientific literature and is the author or co-author of over one hundred papers and articles and has edited several books. He has held pre doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships from the National Science Foundation, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. He has had visiting teaching positions at Oxford, the Ecole Normale Superieure, the California Institute of Technology, and the Technische Universitat Munchen.
Dr. Langenberg serves or has served on a number of boards including the Board of Directors of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, of which he was Chairman; the Board of Directors of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation; the Board of Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania; the Executive Board of the National Association of the State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, of which he was Chairman; he is also President of the American Physical Society and sits on the board of the National Council for Science and the Environment.
A native of North Dakota, Dr. Langenberg earned his B.S. at Iowa State University, his M.S. at the University of California, Los Angeles, and his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. All of his degrees are in physics and, in addition, he has received honorary degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and the State University of New York. |
