DPD Program Philosophy and Mission Statement
The faculty of the Nutrition and Food Science DPD Program at the University of the District of Columbia believe that as the scope of dietetics broadens, teaching and learning activities provide a strong foundation in liberal arts and sciences, technology and information systems, food science, foodservice management and in the scientific knowledge of nutrition. The DPD program is committed to providing students of these programs with a broad based culturally sensitive education to prepare them to promote nutrition and well being of individuals and groups in a variety of settings. The DPD Program is also committed to providing the educational foundation for admission of diverse and international student population.
The mission of the DPD at the University of the District of Columbia, Washington D.C. is to graduate students who are successfully prepared to enter an internship, a graduate program, or employment in clinical, community, or food service settings.
Goals of the DPD Nutrition and Food Science baccalaureate Program
- To increase the recruitment of motivated African American and other ethnically diverse students to assume leadership roles in the dietetics profession
- The DPD Program will prepare graduates to be competent entry-level dietitians.
- Improve student retention and DPD program completion through encouragement, motivation, and financial support.
- Provide opportunities for research in the field of Nutrition and Food Science
- The DPD Program will prepare graduates to demonstrate a commitment to community service.
- Encourage student’s participation and membership in professional organizations.
- Provide opportunities for systematic program revision and evaluation by students, alumni, faculty and Advisory Committee members.
