Replacement of Van Ness-UDC Metro Station Escalators
Metro is planning to fully replace 128 escalators across the system over the next several years. They are planning to begin the escalator replacement project at the Van Ness-UDC Metrorail station. Beginning on or about November 1, they will close the escalators on the EAST SIDE of Connecticut Avenue to replace both escalators. Customers will have full access to the station using the escalator and stairs on the WEST SIDE of Connecticut Avenue. In addition, the newly renovated elevator will be available for station access.
By closing this side of the entrance and replacing both escalators at the same time, Metro will be able to complete the project in half the time. They estimate that the project will take about 19 weeks, with work taking place over two shifts each day. Traffic impacts would be limited to occasional overnight lane closures on Connecticut Avenue as cranes lift sections of escalators into and out of the work site. During the escalator replacement, they will also make structure repairs and improvements to the entrance. Metro will post escalator/elevator technicians at the station for the duration of the project to ensure that the remaining units remain in service and available to customers.
