President Sessoms featured speaker at APLU event

Washington, DC - UDC President, Dr. Allen Sessoms was a featured speaker at the initial program of the Transatlantic Urban Partnership for Energy Efficiency convened by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities and the Virginia Tech Energy Efficiency Partnership.

The Transatlantic Urban Partnership brings together cities, their partner universities and other interested parties from the United States and Europe to present and discuss best practices in urban sustainability. The initial meeting featured sustainability efforts in Stockholm, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Lausanne, Switzerland as well as U.S. efforts in Philadelphia, Portland, and Washington, DC related to high performance buildings, smart grid and advanced urban transportation systems. The discussion showcased the way these cities have successfully partnered with universities to promote energy efficiency and innovation in their respective regions. Dr. Sessoms highlighted the university’s partnership with the District Department of the Environment to develop 130,000 square feet of green roofs on the Van Ness campus.

Mayor Vince C. Gray provided the official welcome to the 130 meeting participants on behalf of the residents of the District of Columbia.

This meeting was the first step towards developing a broader network that crosses the Atlantic and enables high-level learning and the exchange of technologies and practices across both continents in the area of urban sustainability. The future of sustainability is going to be shaped at the metropolitan level and the degree to which cities like the District of Columbia and universities like UDC collaborate is integral to pushing innovation forward.
