University plans for New Student Center
BY HAPPY BENSON, KEA DODSON, AND GEANETT GIRON
As the proposition to build a UDC Students Center receives thoughtful consideration, the University Student Government Association (USGA), is enlisting students support in hopes of moving the project along.
Many students welcome the idea of having a new student center. Adrian Wilkins, Mass Media, Visual and Performing Arts- TV productions major said, "The student center will be a great asset to the school because it would give students a place to hang out while waiting for their other classes to begin. "
The student center is currently in the design phase. Construction is not set for years yet. Michael Andrews, university spokesperson said, "We are in the preliminary stages and years away from breaking ground on this thing [student center]." The design budget is $500,000. However, there is no budget for the construction of the center. Talks about where the center will go are still in progress. One area suggested has been the area beside the Learning Resources building. The university committee is still working on a timeline for the design, construction and building of the center."
The center is expected to address the inadequacy of the school to provide a place where students can socialize and engage in academic activities beyond what is currently offered by the library and computer labs. USGA spokesperson Rina T. Daniels, said, "The students need a place where they can socialize, and, more importantly, study beyond 9 p.m. Currently, this opportunity is not available on campus as the Learning Resources Division closes at 9 p.m. This is one of the many needs that the proposed center will cater to if the plan to build it is Okayed."
Nineteen-year-old Beverly Medina, Department of Education- Early Childhood major agrees, with Wilkins she said is happy that part of her "tuition money will serve to open a center where students can go and learn more about the university's clubs and organizations while still interacting with their peers."
