UDC Students Enjoy European Getaway

Thirty students (one from Montgomery County) and two professors from the University of the District Columbia enjoyed the blue skies and clear ocean water of Greece and the wonderful works of art of Italy during a 9-day trip this summer.

"It's not the same to talk about the Michelangelo in class than to see the actual piece," said Mass Media and Visual Arts Department Professor Daniel Venne, who with the help of Professor Meredith Rode and E F Educational Tours sponsored this trip.

During their 4-day stay in Italy the group enjoyed the Italian culture and typical food including the famous Gelato, an Italian ice cream which has only 1/3 of the fat of regular American ice cream and more flavor.

Some of the places they had the chance to visit were the ancient ruins of the Forum Romanum where many social gatherings took place; the Colosseum, the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel courtesy of Michelangelo and the Vatican.

The Colosseum of Rome and the Vatican were among one of the favorite places visited by students.

The next stop was to Greece. During their 5-day stay in Greece , the group had the opportunity to test their public speaking skills at the best preserved amphitheater in the world, Epidaurus, which dates back to the 4th century B.C. Students also enjoyed Greek dances and typical food including the exquisite baklava.

Plans are already being made for next year's trip. Professor Venne said, "Professor Rode and I will be going on a 10-day tour to Spain and Portugal next spring. We will leave on May 24, 2007 and are calling for students to join us on this excursion.

A"This can be a great opportunity to gain knowledge and receive UDC credit for the trip to Europe by enrolling in the class Arts Studies Abroad," he said.
