UDC’s annual Pride Week, (Feb. 13-17), began with an open-house celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony at the new state of the art Counseling and Career Development Center  located in building 39, 120.

The center has new desks, computers, and other necessities required to prepare students for today’s ever-changing work force.

The Office of Community Outreach and Involvement held a lunch and discussion focusing on Greek fraternities, and whether they are doing enough to serve the communities they represent.  It was hosted by Dr. Gail Anderson-Holness and was followed by a great buffet-style lunch, which is tradition during UDC Pride Week.  Other events of the day included the USGA Open House, and the UDC Valentine’s Day Dance, featuring a DJ, dancing, and a diverse spread of delicious foods and drinks.

Wednesday morning, the annual Founder’s Day Convocation included Mayor Anthony Williams, D.C. House Delegate Eleanor Holmes-Norton, as well as other local scholars and celebrities.  Convocation is the pinnacle of UDC Pride Week, honoring those who help make the  UDC dream a reality. Keynote speaker was Dr. Portia Holmes Shields, former president of Albany State University in Albany, Ga. and a graduate of D.C. Teachers College, one of institutions, which preceded UDC.

Other events during the week included a poetry slam, an alumni panel discussion on the benefits of attending UDC, a pool tournament, and a viewing of a film about Emmit Till, an African-American boy whose murder in 1955 helped galvanize the civil rights movement.
