Bush debate

On February 27th 2006 the University of the District of Columbia Journalism Club sponsored a historical debate themed, “What is the Bush Administration Doing for Black People.” The venue, UDC’S main campus, Building 38 2nd floor Window Lounge was packed with an overflow crowd.
Syndicated Talk Radio host Mark Levine, host of the “Inside Scoop” and Hillary Shelton, NAACP Director scorned the Bush administration for its callous disregard for the African-Americans, from its judicial nominations to the high courts to the gross mishandling of Hurricane Katrina victims.
Local Businessman and Republican Mark Head, of NVA Multifamily Partners, and Sherman Parker, a Missouri State Senator who is running as Republican candidate for Congressman, defended the GOP, but failed to sell President Bush’s apparent good intentions to an angry audience. The Republican debaters bent backwards to persuade that African Americans have been equally shortchanged by Democratic administrations and the question of race is not a government priority in the current administration.
The debate was animated and theatric since the audience verbally sparred with Head, who said that black people have to pull up by their bootstraps like all the immigrants. He exhorted ” Black people should not wait for handouts, but we should look within our inner selves and bring out a new start.” He exemplified his opinions utilizing the example of immigrants whose goals he said
