Alumna Honored for her love of UDC! |
The Office of Development is pleased to announce the:
Phyllis Campbell Newsome
Endowed Scholarship in Urban Studies |
|
Mr. Robert “Bo” Newsome (shown to the left with President, Dr. William L. Pollard) recently presented the University with a $50,000 gift to create an endowed scholarship to honor his late wife Mrs. Phyllis Campbell Newsome who is an alumna of UDC. The scholarship supports female students pursuing a four year degree in Urban Studies.
Phyllis touched the lives of so many that she is honored by several organizations through named awards and scholarships. The Center for Nonprofit Advancement’s (formerly WCA) Phyllis Campbell Newsome Public Policy Leadership Award for advocates of community change and justice; The Women of Montgomery’s Phyllis Campbell Newsome Rising Star Award for emerging female community leaders; and The National Council of Nonprofit Associations created an award that recognizes a staff member of a state association for leadership in and commitment to the nonprofit sector. This award was created in the name of Phyllis Campbell Newsome, who was the Director of Advocacy and |
Community Relations for the Center for Nonprofit Advancement, formerly the Washington Council of Agencies for eight years.
Phyllis was a remarkable woman who had a passion and compassion for the people that the nonprofit sector serves. She was especially interested in issues related to social and economic justice, particularly for children. DC Action for Children, an independent, non-profit, multi-issue advocacy organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children and their families living in the District, was established in 2002 in honor of Phyllis Campbell Newsome. The organization is guided by its vision that each child in the District of Columbia should be afforded the opportunity to reach his or her potential.
Anyone who came in contact with Phyllis realized that she was destined for greatness. That her future contributions to the nonprofit sector will not be realized is a tragedy for all in the sector, particularly those in Washington, DC and the surrounding area. Phyllis and her three day old daughter, Summer Marie passed in 2002. Phyllis passed on her 40th birthday. Upon her death, her family asked that contributions be sent to UDC.
The Department of Urban Affairs, Social Science, and Social Work’s Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership at UDC continues to honor Mrs. Newsome at their annual awards ceremony by awarding the Phyllis Campbell Newsome Award, presented to an outstanding student in the Certificate program who applies leadership skills and knowledge to empowering community leaders to advocate for themselves and their communities.
The gift from “Bo” Newsome is another meaningful way to honor Phyllis’ memory and contribution to the DC community and to UDC. “Phyllis loved UDC,” Mr. Newsome shared when he presented his gift. A longtime political and community activist, Mr. Newsome recently announced his candidacy in the 2006 elections for an At-Large seat on the Montgomery County Council.
Endowed gifts that honor and celebrate loved ones make a tremendous statement of confidence in us as a university. These gifts ensure that UDC’s legacy remains strong and in tact. We are grateful to Mr. Newsome and all of our donors for this kind of support.
