Research Interests: Briefly summarize your research interests here: my research focuses on documenting the history of the deaf community. I look at historical social and educational issues that have challenged and changed disability communities with a focus on deafness. My primary research project looks at issues of how “voice and empowerment” is given to this marginalized group that is voiceless. My dissertation, Miller v. DC Board of Education, being revised for publication consideration, documents a legal educational challenge in the District that produced a significant change in the education of deaf, school age residents by ending their exile from the District. A forthcoming research project looks at the correlation between deaf persons who use interpreters and those interpreters. Should the interpreters reflect the gender, age, or ethnicity for whom they are interpreting. A public history project looks at the significance of teaching with public history site visits.
