Office of Real Estate and Facilities Management

Hello and welcome to the Office of Real Estate & Facility Management at the University of the District of Columbia.  I am Erik Thompson.  I have been with the University for seven years.  Prior to my time here, I spent about fifteen years working as a facility consultant for dozens of University’s across this country.  Now I focus on one client and that is you the University community.  The mission of my office is to ensure the planning, design, construction, operations and maintenance service provided to the University community is done in a seamless and efficient manner.  My team and I strive to do our job in support of the University’s pursuit to become the Nation’s premiere example of a public institution of higher learning.

My office is responsible for some of the Institution’s key operational activities.  We manage the University’s Real Estate activities, Capital Construction projects, Transportation Services, Shipping & Receiving, Reproduction Center, Space Reservations, and Facilities Management.  This means we are responsible for keeping our spaces functioning in a way that best represent the rich history of this institution and the caliber of the students we serve.  We want to ensure our spaces always have comfortable temperatures to support the educational process, faculty and our students.  We want to respond and repair mechanical malfunctions within five business days.  We want to keep our grounds lush and pristine.  We want everything from delivering your mail to helping you safely get between campuses to be a perfect part of your University experience.

I am the first to admit we will not always meet these expectations.  We are working diligently to maintain 40+ year old building systems and replace them with new energy efficient, cutting edge equipment and operating systems.  We did not find ourselves in this situation overnight and realistically it will take some time for us to fix the problem.  However; we do believe we are turning a corner.  We are currently designing replacement projects for our entire mechanical, electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems.  Most recently we approved a project to replace all Van Ness campus elevators over the next couple of years.  We extended the hours of the Reproductions Center to better serve our community and we are working on providing a shuttle service between campuses.

I am fortunate to work with a talent team of managers and a dedicated staff of professional that are passionate about our University.  While we do not formally participate in the education process, we see ourselves as an essential part of what makes the University a special place.  We are proud to be UDC Firebirds, but we are fired up to be part of our great institution as we become the UNIVERSITY OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
