The University of the District of Columbia is pleased to announce the first Scandrett Disability Scholarship. The Scholarship was awarded on Monday, September 28, 2009 to freshman John Vernon. University President Allen L. Sessoms and Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Valerie L. Epps were joined by Mr. Arthur Scandrett (founder) and Mr. William Thompson (UDC Alumni) to make the presentation to the student. Mr. Vernon is a social work major and living with a physical disability. Another 2003 Scrandrett Scholar, Howard University graduate, Dr. Alex Lugo was also present and shared his experience leading to the inspiration to become a faculty member for the University of the District of Columbia. Dr. Lugo currently holds a Ph.D. in psychology and is an adjunct professor in psychology and serves as the Assistive Technology Specialist in the Disability Resource Center. Mr. Scandrett was proud to be in the presence of a former scholarship recipient. Mr. William Thompson, UDC alum, former firefighter and retired Vice President of NASDAQ provided additional inspiration to the audience.
