Center for Urban Education
The Center for Urban Education at the University of the District of Columbia is home to three world-class academic programs. The Center for Urban Education, (The Center) offers a highly sought after Adult Education program, innovative Masters of Art in Teacher and Master of Art programs, and a nationally ranked Speech Language, and Pathology program. Our mission is to prepare pre-service and in-service practitioners with deep pedagogical and content knowledge, care, and hope, while impacting their abilities to make sound judgment that promotes high-quality instruction in diverse urban learning spaces.
We envision a day that all students will have access to state-of-the art, high-quality instruction facilitated by practitioners who are prepared to make outstanding instructional decisions, helping to ensure that students are college and career ready.
Our graduate education programs have been carefully designed to equip our students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to strategically and purposefully address the most widely cited challenges that plague diverse learning settings. Our faculty members meticulously design coursework to address the needs of our candidates. In addition, our field experiences are customized to offer our candidates authentic opportunities to put theory into practice.
Master of Arts
Master of Arts in Teaching (All Concentrations)
The Master’s Programs in Teaching are designed for beginning and experienced teachers who are deeply committed to urban education and education for diverse learners, in grades P-12. The programs help students engage in critical inquiry, problem solving, develop as accomplished teachers, and become high-performing teachers.
Our academic programs are based on a cohort model, in which groups of full-time students move through all classes and phases of the program together. Students are admitted once yearly. All Master of Arts programs are completed in a full calendar. Completion of the program requires Summer, Fall, and Spring term enrollment. Students benefit from:

- Lasting personal ties and professional networks that aid in career development, and ongoing professional growth
Requirements for the Master of Arts in Teaching degree include 17 total credit hours of course work in
- Human Development
- Instructional Management
- Diversity Studies
- Pre-Student Teaching or Field Experiences
The Program also requires 15 total credit hours in
- Content Specific Methodology
- Advanced Student Teaching or Advanced Field Experiences
- Application Fee
- Graduate Record Exam and or Praxis I (New CASES required for Summer 2014 admits)
- Two letters of Recommendation
- Letter of Intent
- Face-to-Face Interview
