Common Reasons Students Seek Help

Students sometimes wonder if their problems are suitable for counseling.  For this reason we’ve provided examples below.  However, this list is not an inclusive one.  If for any reason you feel that your life is being disrupted and you could use some help, please drop by the Center during our walk-in hours or call us for an appointment at 202.274.6000.

Listed below are some of the most common reasons that students come to counseling:

  • Feeling blue or anxious
  • Concerns about eating patterns
  • Relationships of all kinds
  • Coping with loss
  • Time management concerns
  • Substance abuse
  • Problems with school or studying
  • Feeling overwhelmed with work
  • Family problems
  • Concerns about sexuality
  • Feeling homesick
  • Coping with disability
  • A desire to just feel more contented

Emergencies
If you are currently experiencing a mental health emergency or are concerned about your own safety or the safety of someone else, please do not delay.  Call 911 for immediate help.
