Question of the Week: Can I get Bird Flu (Avian Influenza) by eating chicken?

According to the World Health Organization, the cooking process destroys the avian influenza virus. Properly cooked chicken is completely safe for consumption, and cannot infect the consumer. In short….Eating well cooked chicken will not cause bird flu.

Nutrition on Demand

Nutrition Education – When You Want It–Where You Want It.  Nutrition on Demand provides nutrition education at the request of the community.  This unique program focuses on the age and health requirements of the requesting community group and encourages responsibility for ones own health. Topics vary and include nutrition education on Diabetes, Cardiovascular health, Obesity, Hypertension, Cholesterol etc.

Other topics include Soybeans, the Food pyramid, 5-a day, Vegetarian diets, Prenatal Nutrition, Infant and Toddler Nutrition    A variety of methods are used to teach nutrition. These methods include cooking demonstrations, nutrition activities, seminars, training etc. The target audience ranges from preschoolers to seniors.

The Asthma Project

This project falls under the category of Ownership and maintenance of affordable housing. This project is a partnership between Environment and Natural Resources, FCS and The housing and environment Program Units. The ENR unit provides expertise in pest control and management, FCS provides expertise on sanitation issues and the Housing Unit provides expertise on indoor air quality and home repairs. Outcomes and impacts will be measured by the decrease in asthma episodes in the project participants.

Teachers Understanding Nutrition and Agriculture Grant Project (TUNA)

This USDA grant funded project aims to incorporate nutrition and agriculture concepts into the school curriculum, as part of the ongoing effort to curb the increasing childhood obesity rates in the U.S.
