What is Continuing Education (CE) ?
The Continuing Education (CE) program at the Community College of the District of Columbia (CCDC) provides people with opportunities for personal, professional and civic growth. Our courses are designed to provide people with the skills they need for current and emerging job markets as well as for exploring personal interests. Anyone can sign up for a class, no matter what your education background is, simply fill out our online registration form.
Learning from the past, building toward the future. In the 19th century, an American lyceum movement provided adult education in cities and towns across the country. Many adults relied on traveling teachers who provided short term instruction on new innovations including science, current events and mathematics. Lyceums were public spaces that not only provided space for learning but also a place for community theatre and civic activism. This movement was in many ways our country’s earliest effort at adult education.
We see Continuing Education at the Community of the District of Columbia as an extension of this movement. We aspire to become a public place where people can learn, new ideas can be shared and workshops can be conducted that provide people with the tools they need to live inspired and rewarding lives.
We will provide both online and instructor led classes. Continuing Education is part of the Division of Workforce Development and Lifelong Learning in the Community College of the District of Columbia.
Currently, there are few affordable adult education options for District residents that offer comprehensive certificate and Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credits for participation and attendance in approved classes and workshops.
Online and Distance Learning options: We will offer online courses specializing in health services, education, business, engineering, legal studies, automotive, technology, creative/design, writing and language and professional development. New courses and areas of study will be added as we identify interest. Learners can choose more comprehensive certificate-driven courses lasting from 6-12 months or shorter courses lasting from 6-8 weeks.
Live Classes coming soon: We are also excited to provide courses with live instruction. Beginning in 2010, we will begin rolling out prototype courses in our program for Public Service and Nonprofit Leadership Studies that will include courses on effective advocacy, grassroots organizing and civic engagement techniques. We plan on offering personal enrichment courses such as photography, cooking, ballroom dance, creative writing, home repair and many others.
What kind of classes are you interested in? We are committed to providing our classes in neighborhoods across the city. We are here to serve you.
