Miss Browns bio

Biography

Ariana Brown is an active student leader mass media major originally from New York City. At the University of the District of Columbia, Ariana is a producer of the 4.0 TV Television Program which is written, filmed and produced by UDC students and a member of the Undergraduate Student Government Association‘s Student Ac-tivities Student Events (SASE) Committee. She also works with the University‘s Student Outreach and Activities Department.

Ariana spent a significant number of her elementary school years living in the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean. Her formative years there allowed her to see the United States with a broader world view. She understands that the negative economic impact under which many UDC families and students are experiencing are even direr in places where the economic system is not as strong. Ariana enjoys the cultural gifts of growing up in Trinidad, New York and the Washington DC area. Each year she volunteers for, and encourages friends and family, to participate in DC Carnival - a celebration of all Caribbean islands culture featuring songs, dance and arts.

Through social media and other online and conventional commu-nication tools, Ariana has kept a strong bond with family members liv-ing in Trinidad. She also maintains favorable ties with the large inter-national community at UDC and the Washington DC area commu-nity. Due to her background, she hopes to serve as a bridge between the local, non-local and international students at UDC.
Ariana‘s platform for the 2011-2012 academic year will be, ―Communication and Positive Action Equal Change‖. She intends to carry out her platform by initiating programs and supporting existing programs which heighten students‘ awareness of campus issues and ac-tivities that are beneficial to them. ―All it takes is communication and positivity to make a change!!! Here at the University of the District of Columbia, I believe there is a tremendous amount of opportunity to change the involvement of our student body.‖ In making this state-ment during the Miss University of the District Columbia 2011 Show-case, Ariana wanted then, and continues now to highlight that com-munication is key to the success of her platform. This year, Ariana will engage with all students through open ‗meet and greet‘ sessions, forums, and attendance at student organization events – highlighting all opportunities available to students through all available communi-cation means. Miss Brown will work with the USGA and campus groups to reactivate inactive clubs and organizations and, in doing so, to create a fun and active environment for her peers. Reaching all of UDC‘s campuses to engage students and represent their voices posi-tively is Ariana‘s highest priority. Ariana also hopes to engage with organizations at surrounding universities to build relationships and coalitions for future events.

Ariana is the daughter of her proud parents, Ian Brown and Lisa Guy, and the loving sister to Jadini Phillips, a senior at Northwestern High School. Ariana will graduate with a bachelor‘s degree in Mass Media in 2012.
