Rev. Dr. Kendrick E. Curry, Senior Pastor The Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church Washington, DC
For the past six years, the Reverend Dr. Kendrick E. Curry has served as the Senior Pastor of The Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church (PABC), a ministry that transforms lives for the common good of the church and community.
From 1995-2003, Dr. Curry has previously worked as a researcher at the Union Carbide Corporation (now Dow Chemical) in Charleston, WV; an Associate Director of Research at West Virginia State University; as the Principal Investigator of the prestigious NASA/Harriett G. Jenkins Pre-doctoral Fellowship Program administered by the United Negro College Fund Special Programs Corporation in Fairfax, VA; and as a private consultant in engineering and education. During this time, Dr. Curry was also licensed to preach the gospel on March 23, 1997 at the First Baptist Church of Charleston, WV. Dr. Curry was later called to Pastor the Bethlehem Baptist Church on August 3, 1998. He was ordained on January 3, 1999, and was installed as the pastor on February 21, 1999. Dr. Curry continued pastoring and working as a researcher and program director until he assumed the pastorate at The Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church on November 1, 2003.
Dr. Curry has sought to academically prepare himself for life and ministry from 1984-2002. During this time, he received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering (Cum Laude) from Prairie View A&M University. He earned the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan, and the Master of Divinity (Magna Cum Laude) from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University, where he was class valedictorian. Additionally, in 2009, he has completed the Clergy Spiritual Life and Leadership Program at Shalem Institute of Spiritual Formation, and he is currently a participant in the Pastoral Excellence Program of the Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention.
Dr. Curry actively participates in the faith community and the community at-large. He is active with the Progressive National Baptist Convention, the American Baptist Convention and the Southern Baptist Convention. Dr. Curry is a member of the Executive Board of the Baptist Convention of DC and Vicinity, where he serves as Treasurer, and the District of Columbia Baptist Convention (DCBC), where he is the Chair of the Mission, Stewardship, Support and Development Team and serves on the Council for Ordination. As a member of the Missionary Baptist Minister’s Conference of DC and Vicinity, Dr. Curry serves on the Civic and Social Action Committee. He has served as the Chair of Mayor’s Interfaith Council and as a mayoral appointee to the Project Labor Agreement Task Force for the Washington Nationals stadium. Dr. Curry is also a Director of the Stoddard Baptist Home Board. He is a strong advocate for education and academic excellence, and as such serves as the Vice Chair and Ambassador for the Washington DC Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (WDC STEM) Partnership.
Dr. Curry is happily married to the Reverend Karen Whitney Curry and is the proud father of two wonderful children: Keyona and Kendrick, II.
