Jerome Shelton
Jerome Shelton, a third generation Washingtonian, received the foundation of his education in the Washington D.C. Public Schools. He is a 1971 graduate of The District of Columbia Teachers College where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education. He obtained a Master of Arts degree in Guidance and Counseling from Trinity College in Washington, DC and earned extensive post-master’s credits at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. His subsequent educational training includes studies and certification from the American University and Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Jerome began his teaching career at John Burroughs Elementary School, followed by administrative appointments at all levels of the DCPS system. He served as Assistant Principal at Bunker Hill Elementary and Principal of Harrison Elementary where he attended first and second grades. At the secondary level he served as Assistant Principal of Dunbar High School and Principal of Fort Lincoln Community School, Dix Street Academy and Eastern High School until he retired in 2002.
His additional service includes Chairman of the Elementary Athletic League and Chairman of the Community School Assistant Principals’ Association. He was elected and served on the Executive Board of the Washington Teachers Union. During his tenure with the WTU, he was elected 1979 to the Board of Directors of The DC Teachers Federal Credit Union, where he has served as Chairman for the past 11 years.
Jerome married Violet Radford, also a 1971 graduate of DC Teachers College. They are the proud parents of a son and daughter.
