UDC LADY FIREBIRDS FALL TO DAVIS & ELKINS

Stats for Davis & Elkins Game

Washington, DC—The University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds lost their opening season game tonight to the Davis & Elkins Lady Senators by the score of 58-59 on a last second three pointer by guard Kate Bright (Richmond, VA). UDC jumped out to an early 12 point  lead and ended the 1st half leading 33-24. In the 2nd half,  Davis & Elkins closed the gap, and trailed by only one point with 1.3 seconds remaining after a UDC foul. After taking an inbound pass, Bright turned to the basket and launched a three point shot that hit nothing but the net, draining the life out of the Lady Firebirds.

UDC was hoping to celebrate their return to the basketball court after a year’s hiatus, after the University suspended the men’s and women’s teams in November of 2004, due to questions about athlete eligibility. Tonight’s loss was disappointing, but there were some bright spots which speaks well for the remainder of the season.

In the loss, UDC’s forward Jennifer Jones (Newark, NJ)  scored 17 points in 29 minutes of play, to lead the Lady Firebirds in defeat. The next closest scorers for UDC were center Clarissa Newton (Albany, NY) ,  and guard Deidra Bumbrey ( Staten Island, NY) with 9 points, respectively. Forward Nikki Yokum
(Seneca Rocks, WV) and forward Courtney Pawlak (Pittsburgh, PA) both scored 17 points each to lead the Davis & Elkins.

UDC’s next game will be November 19, against Cheyney University in Cheyney, Pennsylvania.
