BLUEFIELD STATE DEFEATS UDC IN VOLLEYBALL
October 23, 2005- Washington, DC : The Bluefield State College Lady Blues defeated the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds this afternoon 3-0 in the UDC Gymnasium. This was UDC’s first match since September 20, when they defeated Lincoln University. The team postponed several matches because some of its players were injured, then the coach, Janee' Hayes resigned unexpectedly a week ago. Bluefield capitalized on the addition of several new players for UDC, who played their first volleyball game today. The lack of experience was evident as UDC could not sustain several leads and allowed Bluefield to catch up and finally win two of the games.
Jennifer Lilly led the Lady Blues with nine kills, five aces and one block. She was followed by teammates Amanda Dispennett with seven kills, two aces, one block, and Shena Toler with six kills, five aces and one block. Nikki Mackey provided twenty-three assists while Dispennett made eight digs and Lilly contributed five digs. Bluefield had more balanced scoring which eventually wore down the Lady Firebirds.
Jana Hoerner led UDC with eleven kills, three aces and four blocks. Stephanie Leon added eleven kills, three aces and two blocks, while Dhalia Pierre contributed seven kills to the losing effort. Sindy Agudelo provided twenty-one assists, while Pierre contributed fourteen digs.
UDC’s next match will be October 26, against St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Virginia.
