UDC LADY FIREBIRDS DROP COLUMBIA UNION LADY PIONEERS 82-61
Takoma Park, MD: The chill of a February Sunday afternoon followed the Columbia Union College Lady Pioneers into their gymnasium where it slowed them to the extent that they could not keep up with the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds, and succumbed to them today by the score of 82-61. This UDC win split the two schools’s 2005-06 record, with each winning at home and sharing the bragging rights for the season.
UDC arrived with victory on their minds and moved swiftly to build a 37-22 point lead that they took into the locker room at the end of the first half. The Lady Firebirds hit 44%
(15-34) of their first half two point shots, while the Lady Pioneers made only 27% (8-29) of their shots. UDC also made 87% (7-8) of their first half free throws to Columbia Union’s 57% (4-7).
The Lady Firebirds continued their shooting pace in the second half hitting 46 % (15-33) of their two point shots and 33% (1-3) of their 3-point shots. UDC also took advantage of Columbia Union’s fouls troubles by making 70% (14-20) of their free throw attempts in the second half and 75% for the game.
Leading the Lady Firebirds was Jaime Brown with 17 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 steals. Deidra Bumbrey followed with 16 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals. Sylvia Kemp added 14 points 5 rebounds and 1 assist, and Jennifer Jones scored 12 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, dished out 1 assist and made 2 steals.
Leading the Columbia Union Lady Pioneers in scoring were Bethany Sloat with 19 points, Cherisse Buddy 17, and Lisa Brewer with 10.
This win improved the Lady Firebirds’ season record to 9-20. UDC will see their next action in their final home game of the season on Wednesday, February 22, at 5:30 p.m., in the first game of a double-header against the Virginia Union University Lady Panthers.
