Dean's Welcome

Dr. Ben. O. Latigo

Welcome to the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, your Premier Professional School at the University of the District of Columbia. The University is located on Connecticut Avenue in the Forest Hills District in N.W. Washington, D.C., the Nations Capital. The University enjoys the ambiance of a residential area with the convenience of a business district served by the Metro. The campus is surrounded by Embassies and Foreign Missions and is only a metro stop from the world famous Washington National Zoo. The University's student body is diverse and international, much like Washington. In addition to serving the urban needs of Washington D.C., about 25% of our students are international. This provides an exceptional opportunity for a global engineering education. The University is easily accessible on the Metro Red Line. We are the most affordable fully accredited higher educational institution in the Nation’s Capital.
The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences is among only 11 Historically Black Colleges and Universities that offer nationally accredited engineering programs. Starting fall 2007, we inaugurated our first master’s degree program in computer science. This program is designed as an evening program. In addition to our 14 professional and technical programs at our Van Ness Campus, The School continues to expand its joint international program with the Modern Academy in Maadi, Egypt. Currently, the joint program offered at MAM enrolls over 400 students in electrical and mechanical engineering, and computer science. During the period 2004-2006, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences saw a record 55% enrollment growth a 46% retention rate, also the highest in the University. During this period, we have also hired six new faculty in computer science, civil and environmental engineering, computer engineering, and information technology. The 35 full-time faculty are supported by about 10 experienced adjunct faculty from industry in disciplines such as aerospace technology, architecture, electrical engineering, fire science, and mechanical engineering.

The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences comprises the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology, the Department of Electrical Engineering, and the Department of Engineering, Architecture, and Aerospace Technology. There are presently four centers in the School. The Science and Engineering Center (SEC) is the School’s acclaimed pre-college program that offers year-round K-12 pre-college programs to Metro DC residents.

The program encourages minority kids to pursue careers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The SEC is also a NASA Education Resource Center.
The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences offers 13 associate and baccalaureate degrees in civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, architecture, computer science, information technology, aviation maintenance, airway science, fire science, and engineering technology; and the new MS in computer science. These are complemented by workforce development and certification programs in Cisco CCNA certification, FAA Aircraft and Powerplant (A&P) mechanic certification at Reagan National Airport.
We are eager to hear from you and to welcome you home! The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences has developed a partnership with the DC-CAP and the DCPS Technology programs to ensure a seamless matriculation to our engineering and professional programs. We welcome residents of the District of Columbia to take advantage of these opportunities. All our prospective in-state or out-of-state students are assured of small classes, one-on-one advising by faculty, state of the art facilities in a number of the disciplines, and a most affordable education.
Welcome Home!
Sincerely,

Dr. Ben O. Latigo
