Institute for Human Service Delivery

FY 2001

The IMA staff training initiatives undertaken by PATHS for DHS/IMA are based on values long promoted by the Department of Human Services. These values include the importance of building institutional capacity through staff development initiatives and the significance of these activities for achieving higher levels of efficiency, effectiveness, and responsiveness. This critical link between a well-trained workforce and excellence in human service delivery has been the driving force behind continuous expansion of earlier training efforts tailored for IMA staff.

Past efforts starting in summer of 1998 included staff training across personnel categories on TANF legislation, team building, supervision, organizational change, diversity awareness, customer service, telephone etiquette, case record documentation, time management, stress management, Microsoft Word and Access, grants writing. The current fiscal year initiatives will include:

Contextualized Writing Initiative for 300 to 350 IMA staff to enhance system capacity:

  • Individualized assessment conducted at the University of the District of Columbia
  • Individualized feedback - letter and in-person or internet or telephone explanation of results sent in mail along with recommended workshops
  • Develop recommended curriculum that is tailored to meet the needs of IMA staff and submit for review and approval of IMA
  • Deliver communications skills training to 300-350 IMA staff, offering ongoing training for staff requiring assistance with writing and communication.
  • Produce materials for approval by IMA to inform IMA staff about training opportunities and engage them in the skills improvement program.
  • Conduct post assessment after a ten-week training cycle to determine participants' progress
