About Us

Paving Access Trails for Higher Security (PATHS) is a training and educational program developed for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) customers by the D.C. Department of Human Services/Income Maintenance Administration (DHS/IMA) in partnership with the University of the District of Columbia (UDC)/School of Business and Public Administration. The PATHS program is designed to emphasize key competencies that TANF customers must demonstrate in order to achieve self-sufficiency. These key competencies include satisfactorily performing workplace duties, achieving academic goals, and meeting family needs and responsibilities.
PATHS provides total wrap-around services that incorporate a variety of services and resources from both the University community, District agencies, and community based partners while addressing and responding to individual needs.
Each training is built on a contextualized learning platform. This platform provides opportunities for participants to practice and aptly apply learned skills and knowledge in real life workplace situations and environments. Many of the trainings are also facilitated in industry specific simulated workplace labs. As clients practice through contextualized learning experiences, confidence is fostered and professional development is enhanced. Key components of the PATHS Program are:

  • Assessments for literacy and career endeavors
  • Comprehensive case management
  • Outreach and retention
  • Job Development
  • Internships, rotations, and volunteerism
  • Family literacy and life management
  • Mentoring and Support Services
