Admissions Process
The first step of the admissions process is for all applicants to take a pre-entrance examination. This exam covers Math, Vocabulary, Science and Reading Comprehension. All applicants must have an acceptable score of 60% or higher to proceed to the next step in the process.
After receiving a satisfactory score of 60% or more on the PN pre-entrance exam, students are required to schedule an “Admissions Interview”. To schedule an Admissions Interview, please call (202) 274-6950. At the time of your interview, you will be required to submit the following documents:
- A state issued driver’s license or non-drivers ID card
- $20 non-refundable money order
- Official high school transcript, college transcript or GED certificate. All transcripts should bear the school’s seal and an authorized signature.
- Medical History and Physical Examination Forms (The PN program requires specific documented evidence of various vaccinations, drug testing, etc.)
- Criminal Background Check (We recommend Global Investigative Services by calling 301/589-0088)
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate (CPR) – Proof of a current certification of CPR from the American Heart Association. The CPR certification must be for the Healthcare Provider.
- Three character reference letters. One reference should be from a current or previous employer. All letters should preferably be typed and they must have an original signature. We do not accept e-mails or unsigned letters.
- A signed and dated passport picture. This photo must have been taken within the last 12-months.
- Proof of US residency
Once you have completed your “Admissions Interview”, you will be notified in writing of your acceptance status into the program.
To enroll in the Nursing Assistant program, individuals are not required to have any previous nursing experience. This program is designed for individuals 18 year’s of age and older. All students must able to speak, read and write the English language at the 6th grade level.
At the time of admissions, applicants will be required to submit the following documents:
- State issued driver’s license or non-drivers ID card
- Criminal Background check no older than one (1) year.
- High School Diploma/GED Certificate
- Medical History/Immunization Records including a tuberculosis (TB test) PPD or chest x-ray which must be certified in writing by a licensed healthcare practitioner and not older than one (1) year.
- Social Security Card
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate (CPR) – Proof of a current certification of CPR from the American Heart Association.
- Successful completion of the comprehensive examination with a 75% or higher or the CASAS Exam given through the Workforce Development Program (WFD).
All applicants are required to take a pre-entrance examination. This exam covers Math, Vocabulary, Science and Reading Comprehension. All applicants must have an acceptable score of 60% or higher to proceed to the next step in the process.
Exams are held twice a month on Friday’s beginning promptly at 9:30 am. Pre-registration is not required as exams are administered on a walk-in first-come first-served basis. The duration of the exam is approximately 4-hours.
Fee: $68 – You must have two separate money orders as follows:
$34 – Made payable to the University of the District of Columbia - PN Program
$34 – Made payable to Professional Health Solutions
When you come for the exam you will need your exam fee, a valid state issued ID and two No. 2 type pencils.

How Do I Receive and Interpret My Results?
Results of the pre-entrance exam will be mailed directly to your home address from the testing service (Professional Health Solutions) about three (3) weeks following the exam.
You should receive your results in the mail within twenty days or approximately three weeks. If you do not receive your results within 4-weeks, please call the program office (202) 274-6950.
Your scores will look like the following example:

If your composite score is 60% or higher, you have passed the pre-entrance exam. You will now need to call the program office to schedule your “Admissions Interview”.
If your score is between 45 – 59%, you should retake the exam as soon as possible. It is suggested that you obtain a GED Study Book from your public library that has sample questions with answers or you may purchase the LVN/LPN Entrance Exams for Nursing Schools book by the National League of Nursing for you to review prior to you retaking the exam.
All nursing assistant students must be able to speak, read and write English at the 6th grade level. During the admissions process, all applicants will be required to take a Comprehensive Exam that will include Reading, English, Vocabulary, Grammar, Math and Science. Prospective students must pass this test with a minimum cumulative score of 75% or higher. Applicants enrolling through the Workforce Development (WFD) Program are required to take the CASAS Exam and pass it with a minimal score of 215.
