Graduate Certificate Adult Education

The Graduate Certificate Program in Adult Education provides a comprehensive, theoretical, and practical perspective and understanding of the field of adult education. The Program addresses the current social, political, and cultural issues that educators and practitioners of adult education face.

Program completers work in a variety of programs that provide services to adults, 16 years of age and older. They teach in programs that include training in adult basic education (ABE), General Education Development (GED), and English as a Second Language (ESL). Additionally, certified adult educators engage in professions that require planning and directing of adult education programs.

Admissions Requirement

Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and must apply to the University as special graduate students. An official transcript from the institution that awarded the baccalaureate degree must be submitted to the Office of Admissions. Applications for admissions to the University may be obtained from:

Requirements for Certification

A total of 18 hours is required to complete the Certificate Program in Adult Education. Additionally, program completers must earn a qualifying score on Praxis I: Academic Skills Assessments, and apply for certification from the State Office of Licensing and Credentialing, District of Columbia Public Schools, 825 North Capitol Street, NW, Washington, DC 20002 Telephone: (202) 442- 5377.

The program should be completed in one year; however, participants may opt to complete the program in two years.

The Graduate Certificate Program in Adult Education is supported by the State Education Agency, Adult Education (SEA, AE).
