College of Arts & Sciences

DEANS'S Welcome

Education should be more than a preparation for a career. A quality education should ignite the creative and intellectual energies of students, and prepare them to continue to learn new skills to meet changing job requirements. This is our goal in the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS).

The CAS is the heart of the University. It provides all undergraduate students with the fundamentals necessary to communicate effectively; think and

reason independently; and analyze and evaluate critically. Our general education offerings also help students clarify their artistic and philosophical values, and develop intellectual curiosity.

The CAS offers more than 30 certificate, associate, baccalaureate and master programs. All programs that are eligible for professional accreditation are fully accredited.

Major fields in which degrees are offered include: Art, Biology, Chemistry, Criminal Justice, Education, English, Environmental Science, French, Health and Physical Education, History, Mass Media, Mathematics, Music, Physics, Sociology, Social Welfare, Theater, and Urban Affairs. All of our certificate and associate degree programs articulate with baccalaureate programs. Students in education, English, math, psychology, and speech & language pathology can also complete a master's degree in the College.

To accommodate our many working students, classes are offered during the day, in the evening, and on the weekends. We are aggressively placing many of our lecture courses
on-line. We expect to launch a full distance learning program by 2002.

The CAS' three institutes, affiliated speech and hearing clinic, art gallery, and jazz archives provide contexts that extend the students' learning beyond the classroom, thus enriching their academic experience. Further, the CAS' distinguished faculty, state-of-the-art instructional and support laboratories, convenient location, and diverse student body make it an ideal setting for students to prepare for a career, develop new job skills, or pursue personal interests.

I hope that you will like what you see as you review our web site, and that you will enroll and experience, firsthand, the vitality and excellence of the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of the District of Columbia!

Sincerely,

Dr. Rachel M. Petty
